GRI and TNFD Launch Mapping Tool for Enhanced Biodiversity Reporting

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) have launched a joint interoperability mapping resource to align TNFD Disclosure Recommendations with GRI Standards, streamlining reporting processes for businesses.

Developed over two years of collaboration, this resource aids GRI’s 14,000 reporting organizations in aligning with TNFD Recommendations, while also supporting TNFD adopters in meeting GRI Standards for sustainability reporting. The tool features a guidance document and a correspondence table to facilitate the process.

The mapping resource emphasizes consistent nature-related concepts and definitions, such as the five drivers of biodiversity loss identified by IPBES. It integrates GRI’s materiality approach with TNFD Recommendations, reflecting TNFD’s flexible approach to materiality.

Bastian Buck, Chief Standards Officer at GRI, commented, “Our collaboration with TNFD has produced a comprehensive mapping tool that supports thousands of organizations already reporting biodiversity impacts using GRI Standards. This resource allows them to integrate TNFD recommendations smoothly, enabling simplified, unified reporting.”

Esther An, Chief Sustainability Officer of City Developments Limited (CDL), noted, “Nature risks are business risks that must be measured and disclosed robustly. As the first Singaporean company to align its disclosures with TNFD Recommendations in 2024 and having adopted GRI 304: Biodiversity since 2017, CDL recognizes the importance of managing nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities for long-term resilience.”

Tony Goldner, Executive Director of TNFD, added, “This joint mapping from GRI and TNFD provides essential support for market participants reporting on nature-related dependencies and impacts using GRI Standards and TNFD Recommendations. We look forward to ongoing collaboration with GRI to offer clear, practical support for both internal assessments and external reporting.”
