Brussels Airport Promotes Green Aviation with Government-Supported SAF Incentives

January 3, 2024

The Brussels Airport Company, with the backing of the federal government, is set to offer a special financial contribution to encourage the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Despite the first delivery of SAF via the NATO pipeline a year ago, its high cost has hindered widespread adoption by airlines.

To overcome this, a new SAF incentive will be introduced in 2024, available to all airlines for flights departing from Brussels Airport. This initiative aligns with the airport’s priority to increase the use of SAF and has received approval from the Belgian government.

Georges Gilkinet, Minister of Mobility, emphasized the need for the aviation sector to reduce its ecological footprint and highlighted this support mechanism as a concrete step towards large-scale CO2 emission reduction in the aviation sector.

The SAF incentive will apply to all passenger and cargo airlines, for both short-haul and long-haul flights departing from Brussels Airport throughout 2024.
