Future of Work: Technology and Climate Change to Redefine Jobs by 2030

A new Future of Jobs Report 2025 reveals that technological advancements and climate priorities are set to reshape global labor markets, with 60% of businesses projected to undergo transformative changes by 2030. The report, which draws insights from over 1,000 global employers across 22 industries, highlights the growing demand for AI and sustainability expertise, alongside the urgent need for workforce reskilling.

Technology to Drive Job Market Transformation

Digitalization, AI, and automation are expected to play a pivotal role in reshaping industries. By 2030, technology-related roles will see a surge in demand, including:

  • AI and Machine Learning Specialists
  • Big Data Analysts
  • Cybersecurity Experts
  • Software Developers

“Businesses must integrate tools that foster resilience and innovation to thrive in a technology-driven future,” noted James Cronan, Managing Director of ESG Reporting Intelligence.

The report reveals that 70% of employers plan to recruit for tech-focused roles, underlining the critical need for advanced digital skills.

Green Transition Fuels Growth in Sustainability Roles

As climate change mitigation becomes a top priority, the shift toward green jobs is accelerating. Renewable energy, sustainability, and environmental stewardship are emerging as high-growth areas. Key roles include:

  • Renewable Energy Engineers
  • Environmental Specialists

Nearly half of employers surveyed (47%) have outlined plans for climate-related transformations, with significant investments in electric vehicles, energy storage, and renewable energy projects driving job creation.

Reskilling: A Workforce Priority

With 39% of current skills expected to become obsolete by 2030, workforce reskilling is critical. The report highlights:

  • 85% of employers are prioritizing upskilling initiatives.
  • 50% plan to transition existing employees into emerging roles to reduce layoffs.

Skills in analytical thinking, adaptability, and resilience are expected to gain prominence, while manual dexterity and physical precision decline in demand.

Balancing Job Creation and Displacement

The report predicts that between 2025 and 2030, 170 million new roles will emerge, particularly in healthcare, education, technology, and renewable energy. However, these gains could be offset by the loss of 92 million jobs, primarily in clerical and administrative sectors.

The Path Forward: Balancing Innovation with Inclusion

The workforce of the future will depend on a strategic balance of technological innovation, climate action, and inclusivity. Employers are increasingly adopting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, with 83% reporting active initiatives.

As businesses prepare for the decade ahead, the report underscores the importance of workforce agility and sustainability, presenting a roadmap for resilience in an evolving global economy.
