EU Parliament Approves New Law to Boost Manufacturing of Key Decarbonization Technologies

Lawmakers in the European Parliament have overwhelmingly approved the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA), a pivotal legislation designed to bolster EU manufacturing of essential technologies vital for achieving Europe’s ambitious climate and energy objectives. The NZIA, proposed by the European Commission in March 2023 as part of its Green Deal Industrial Plan strategy, aims to enhance the competitiveness of Europe’s net zero industries and support the EU’s transition to climate neutrality. The legislation, which now awaits approval from the EU Council, follows an informal agreement earlier this year between Parliament and the Council on the new law. The NZIA targets 19 specific technologies crucial for the net zero transition, including renewable energy, storage solutions, and carbon capture, outlining actions to streamline processes, enhance sustainability criteria, and foster workforce development. Lead MEP Christian Ehler hailed the adoption of the NZIA as a significant step toward realizing Europe’s economic, climate, and energy aspirations, emphasizing the importance of industry in achieving these goals.
