The European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) has enhanced its digital sustainability reporting infrastructure for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by launching a multi-language version of the VSME Digital Template and its accompanying XBRL Taxonomy.
What’s New
- The updated template enables users to switch the display language and generate inline XBRL reports in four additional languages: Spanish, Polish, Lithuanian, and Portuguese — alongside English.
- These translations were prepared by EFRAG and reviewed by national standard setters.
- Final translations for other EU member states (e.g. Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark) are in progress and expected by early November 2025.
- The release also includes general improvements and bug fixes: the updated template, explanatory notes, change log, source code, and demo files are all publicly available.
- On 6 October 2025, EFRAG and the European Commission hosted an outreach event titled “The VSME Standard in Action: From the European Commission’s Recommendation to Digital Solutions”, where digital reporting solutions for SMEs were showcased.

- The multilingual capability helps reduce barriers to adoption — SMEs in different parts of Europe can use the tool in their local language, enhancing clarity and accessibility.
- Inline XBRL formats ensure structured, machine-readable sustainability reporting, supporting comparability, data aggregation, and analysis by investors, banks, value-chain partners and regulators.
- The open-source / publicly-available nature of the template allows commercial and non-commercial service providers (including software vendors and ESG solution firms) to integrate the template freely into their systems.
- This marks a clear step towards streamlining sustainability disclosure workflows for smaller enterprises, helping them meet regulatory expectations cost-effectively without needing to build reporting tools from scratch.
