The New Zealand External Reporting Board (XRB) has published its Draft Climate Reporting Roadmap 2026 for public consultation, setting out a proposed pathway to align the country’s climate-related disclosure requirements with the global IFRS S2 Climate-related Disclosures standard.
The roadmap proposes introducing a new NZ IFRS S2 Climate-related Disclosures standard while retaining New Zealand-specific requirements where appropriate. It also aims to improve alignment with Australia’s climate reporting framework, helping organizations operating across both jurisdictions simplify compliance and enhance reporting consistency.
Key Highlights
• Proposed adoption of NZ IFRS S2 Climate-related Disclosures based on IFRS S2.
• Greater alignment with Australia’s sustainability reporting requirements.
• Retention of New Zealand-specific modifications where required by legislation or regulatory expectations.
• Early adoption proposed from 1 October 2026.
• Mandatory application proposed from 1 January 2033, allowing organizations a phased transition from the current Aotearoa New Zealand Climate Standards (NZ CS).
The XRB is seeking stakeholder feedback on the roadmap before finalizing the next phase of implementation.
