TNFD Updates Nature Reporting Recommendations and Releases LEAP v2.0

The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) announced updated recommendations and LEAP v2.0 on October 15, 2026—the first updates to these documents since September 2023.

The announcement introduces environmental-crime guidance and finalized indicators and metrics for invasive alien species and the state of nature. These are updates to voluntary guidance, rather than a new reporting mandate.

What Has Changed?

The updated recommendations incorporate environmental crime across governance, strategy, risk and impact management, and metrics and targets.

LEAP v2.0 expands guidance on:

  • State-of-nature and invasive alien species measurement.
  • Nature-related risks and opportunities.
  • Environmental crime and transition planning.
  • Landscape and seascape approaches.
  • Financial institutions’ portfolio assessments.
  • Interoperability with SBTN guidance for science-based targets.

What Happens Next?

TNFD says its assessment and disclosure guidance development program is complete, with no further updates planned. Its continuing work will focus on capacity building and supporting ISSB, ISO and others standard setting.

The announcement describes the ISSB nature-related exposure draft as forthcoming and development of an ISO standard based on LEAP as underway. Neither should be presented as a finalized standard.

What Should Sustainability Reporting Teams Review?

For organizations using TNFD, a practical next step is to compare existing assessment and reporting processes with the updated guidance.

Teams can identify which metrics or methodologies need review, what additional information may be required, and who will assess and approve the resulting disclosures. Changes to assessment methods should remain connected to the explanations and evidence used in reporting.

The operational challenge is maintaining continuity between assessment findings, reported metrics, supporting evidence, and final disclosures. Keeping these elements connected helps reviewers understand how a conclusion was reached and which information supports it.
