UNEP FI Publishes Resources to Strengthen Sustainability Disclosures and Assurance Readiness

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) has published resources to help organizations assess sustainability disclosure readiness and help financial institutions use reported information in risk management.

Listed on October 8, 2026, the resources cover sector-specific disclosures, sustainability reporting assurance, and connections between sustainability risks and financial effects.

The Enhancing Sustainability-related Disclosures publication brings together three briefings and a readiness toolkit. These are voluntary resources, not new reporting requirements or assurance deadlines.

What Do the New Resources Cover?

The three briefings examine:

  • Sector-specific disclosures: How sustainability topics and metrics can inform risk identification and assessment.
  • Sustainability reporting assurance: What assurance levels convey, how materiality assessments may be examined, and how financial institutions can prepare.
  • Financial connections: How sustainability risks can affect financial statements, counterparties, sectors, and portfolios.

What Is the Disclosure Readiness Toolkit?

The accompanying Sustainability Disclosure Readiness Indicators Toolkit supports companies and financial institutions in assessing their readiness for sustainability-related risk disclosures.

It combines a self-assessment survey with a methodology to support internal reflection and gap analysis. The survey draws on publicly available standards and frameworks, and participants receive a summary of their readiness indicators.

Why Does This Matter for Reporting Teams?

The resources connect disclosure preparation with the reliability and financial usefulness of the information being reported.

For sustainability and finance teams, this provides a practical reason to review how data is collected, how assumptions are documented, and how evidence supports reported conclusions. A readiness assessment can help identify gaps; addressing those gaps requires clear ownership, consistent controls, and documented review.

Teams can use the resources to inform preparation while continuing to follow their applicable reporting and assurance requirements.
