The United States, under the Trump administration, has formally rejected and denounced the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), a global framework adopted in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The announcement was made by Edward Heartney, Counselor for Economic and Social Affairs at the U.S. Mission to the UN, during a General Assembly session.
Heartney stated that the UN SDGs represent “a program of soft global governance” that is “inconsistent with U.S. sovereignty and adverse to the rights and interests of Americans.” He further emphasized that the administration had undertaken a “course correction” regarding gender and climate policies embedded within the SDGs.
The Trump administration’s decision is part of a broader shift away from international sustainability and climate commitments, including its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and other global climate financing initiatives.
“Globalist endeavors like Agenda 2030 and the SDGs lost at the ballot box. Therefore, the United States rejects and denounces the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, and it will no longer reaffirm them as a matter of course,” Heartney declared.
The UN SDGs consist of 17 key goals aimed at addressing global challenges such as poverty, hunger, education, and environmental protection. The U.S. stance marks a significant departure from previous bipartisan commitments to international sustainability initiatives.
