U.S. Solar Power Generation Set to Lead Growth in 2025 and 2026

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has projected that solar power will be the primary driver of growth in U.S. power generation over the next two years. In a recent report, the EIA stated that utilities and independent power producers in the U.S. are expected to add 26 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity in 2025, followed by an additional 22 GW in 2026.

The growth trajectory follows a record-breaking year in 2024, where the electric power sector added 37 GW of solar capacity, nearly doubling the previous year’s additions. The EIA’s forecast indicates a continued shift toward renewable energy sources as the U.S. moves away from coal power.

The agency also highlighted a significant acceleration in coal retirements, with 6% (11 GW) of coal-generating capacity expected to be removed from the U.S. electricity sector in 2025, followed by a further 2% (4 GW) reduction in 2026. This trend is in line with the growing push for cleaner energy sources and the broader transition to renewable energy within the U.S. energy landscape.
